There is a special place …

There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women. -former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright

This is one of many amazing, inspirational, and insightful quotes from the Women in the World event this week which I had the pleasure of participating in. More quotes and reflection on this wonderful event to come.

Work It, Wick It, Wear It

Working off some J in the T and don’t want everyone to see? (I think the question is, who isn’t?!)

The old ‘hoodie around hips’ trick might make you feel better, but the extra fabric ain’t foolin’ anyone, and is actually doing you a disservice. This is essentially a security blanket. Would you try to work out (or do anything for that matter) while wrapped in a blanket? Me neither. Why? Extra fabric adds bulk, not to mention interfering with your workout. So leave the blankets for bed time and check out the alternative..

Solution: FIT & FABRIC

Fitted, performance fabrics flaunt your figure AND make the most of your gym time.

How?
Slightly thicker= smoothing & flattering
Moisture wicking= comfy! Not like clingy cotton
Look & feel better when you workout= GET MORE DONE and have fun doing it!

Try straight leg, wide waistband pants, or athletic shorts.

My favorite pair are by Nike. The ones pictured are essentially the same, but mine have green piping. I scored them at Marshall’s. (Great active wear buys at Marshall’s, TJMaxx and Daffy’s.)

Lululemon Astro Pants: I must say, I have yet to try these, but I’m told they’re very good.

Shorts Option:
I love my Nike side panel shorts. Mine are hot pink but I’m diggin’ this tie die!

Happy iron-pumping!

Brights Gone Manly

I couldn’t write about brights without adding how the men can rock this hotness. As long as you pick the perfect item, shade, and amount, no color is off-limits. (Ladies, this goes for you too, especially if you’re like me and love to add neon to your looks and keep it in the realm of the socially acceptable.) This is pretty self-explanatory, but I’ll break it down with some tips & pics of what I’ve seen hitting the streets.

KEYS to this look:
Moderation & placement.
Plus, if you’re a rock star and play your cards right, you’ll always have the element of surprise.

Killin’ vs. Overkill:

I don’t like to photograph misled attempts to make fashion happen, but I’ll work on staging some examples. As is the case with most things, less is more when it comes to bright colors. The name of the game is MODERATION. Monochromatic / head to toe brights is a fun trend this year, but it’s better kept to women’s wear.

*Now let’s get to the good stuff!*

They’re sayin’ “Totes Dope!”
Think accessories, trim, and layers. Por ejemplo: Sneakers, layers, and trim. See below for your visuals.

HOT TRIM

This guy in the MoMa garden gets double props, Man-igan PLUS a pinch of bright color = dope. If you look closely, the trim on the front of the cardigan is HOT PINK! It’s hard to see here, but in person I could see it from the other side of the garden. This look, composed of casual, clean lines in basic pieces, doesn’t scream, but still makes a style statement. He knows what’s up and is not afraid to show it. Or at least, that’s what his sweater told me.
(more on man-igans in another post.)

HOT LAYER LOVIN’

Michael is rockin’ some hot orange and red in central park. Layers? Check. Surprise? Double Check! You’d never know he was sporting hot colors from afar (/if I hadn’t made him pose with socks showing). This incognito style is a great option for guys who are a little more shy about expressing their brights love, or who just want to wear neon and stay subtle, professional, etc…

HOT ACCESSORIZING

This cool cat was chillin’ outside the MoMa Design Store. His killer kicks are the perfect accessory to discreetly tell the world, “I’m smooth, I’m hip, and I know it.” What more do we need to know?
Kicks courtesy of Air Jordan collection.

HOT PANTS:
No, not THOSE! I mean hot colored pants. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to photograph this example, but I’ll find a pic and post it later. At the “Fame” trade show at the Javitz Center I saw a guy wearing a great shade of bright yellow trousers paired with basic brown leather slip-on shoes and a navy sport jacket. This was a much bolder way to wear the look, and he totally killed it.

Now get out there and ROCK IT guys!

Got a hip, hoppin’, hot look? E-mail me the pic! I’d love to add you!

Peace out cub scouts. xoxo Liana

What’s the meaning of this!

These pictures both represent a glow from inside out, but if you think about it, also outside-in..

Outside-In Style Mission Statement:
channeling style to build confidence that glows from the inside out.

Wait, you’re saying confidence glows from the inside out, so why are you called Outside-In? I don’t get it. S’plain.
Outside-In is intended to be a play on words by simply reversing the “inside out” idea. It’s really all about inner beauty and showing it to the outside world.

If you think this is confusing you can also think about it this way: If you respect yourself (inner) you’re showing it to the world (outer) by expressing yourself through style. On the flip side of this, taking care of your appearance also cares for and is a way of treating yourself right through and through.

This also applies to making fashion work for men and women on the go. Outside-In relates to the on-the-go lifestyle through the “day to evening” perspective. I.e. looks that take you from playing outside all day to dinner with friends, etc…

And last but certainly not least, Outside-In refers to being out in the world in style. It can truly be interpreted in multiple ways though, so I’d love to hear your version!

Make sense? I hope so. If not, holler. The ideas are still flowin’ and growin’.

Get Glowin’

Sunset at the NYC Piers

This glow sounds pretty dope. How can I get it?

When you’re sure of your worth, value and INNER beauty, you got it. When you feel it in your heart, it glows and shows. Taking care of yourself inside and out shows your inner beauty to the world.

If inner beauty is all that really matters, why bother with style?

All we ever know about each other is the information we choose to share. But not all of the information is through words. Ever hear about a little thing called body language? Non-verbal cues? This falls into that category. And guess what, so does at least 80% of what we communicate. Most of it is out of our hands, but image is one thing we have power over.

The FIRST thing impressed on us when we meet someone? Appearance. You don’t have to be a super model to look good or give a good first impression, but how you present yourself matters. Putting in some effort tells the world loud and proud that you respect yourself, and they will act accordingly. Style is self-expression, and self-respect. Don’t give ’em an excuse to behave badly. And don’t forget, a little bit goes a long way.

Ya dig? Word.

This was the most beautiful sunset EVER. Thanks Tel-Aviv.

p.s. Sunset is one of the ways I came up with the “glow” idea. Hence these pics.

Rockin’ out with: BRIGHTS

New Yorker’s reject color in favor of all black street-wear daily, but I’ve been taking a cue from the runways of Gucci, Dolce and YSL and experimenting with another head-to-toe look that takes us girls-on-the-go from day to evening, BRIGHTS. We’ve been painting our nails neon for a couple of years now, so it’s time to get the cojones to wear these colors loud and proud.

Here’s some tips on how to rock ’em.

Brights are rockin’ all over the streets, gardens, and clocks of NYC.

KEYS to success:
Fabric, texture, balance, and TONE/SHADE.

This look is all about the subtle elements of style we always consider, but since everything is highlighted (for once, no pun intended) there is little room for error.

*You may notice by the end of this post one color that is in EVERY pictured example of this look… I realized it after I finished writing, but it’s a great example of how to wear the hottest color this summer. Can you guess what it is? (It’s not that hard. Check out Bey’s legs, below.)

So Dope:

Bey, reading in the MoMa garden
Bey chose her colors wisely, but succeeds at appearing effortless. Yellow and Orange* are not to be worn foolheartedly as they can be unflattering. However, they are gorgeous if you choose the right SHADES.** Bottoms are a great way to wear tough colors since they don’t affect your face. Bey paired her brights with neutral yet interesting accessories and basic shapes. That’s what I’m talkin’ about! (But really, it is. Read on…)
*spring/summer’s hottest color, see above note
**see keys to success

  • The intense shades you see this season can be totally hot or hell to the not. Prevent the latter by making sure to choose colors you love, but also ones that are most flattering to your skin tone. Just because a color is “in,” doesn’t mean it looks good on you. Make-up can help, but only so much.
  • Choose neutral colors and basic shapes to balance the bold colors. K.I.S.S. comes into play for your silhouettes to make this look totally rockin’. No excessive embellishments or frills s’il vous-plait.(Bey, above, is a good example of all of these points, so my excitement was no surprise when I saw her after writing this!)

Me with my oh-so-stylish Momma on Mom’s day
With this outfit, I stayed all in the orange/red family, choosing simple shapes and similar but different textures to balance.
*Basic cardi and slip dress in tencel/modal & silk.
Then applied KISS to accessories. Gold & bronze metallics, nothing too flashy or oversized. Done and dunzo.
  • When going monochromatic (or staying in the same family like I did above), find slightly different shades of the same color to avoid looking like a crayon. You can also use different textures to break it up. Par example: All purple could be great, but choose your fabrics wisely. (We’ll save details on monochromatic looks for another day.)
Heather (sporting new necklace and orange nails) at lunch in Union Square
Heather shows how to accent brights with other complementary shades. I made her pose to show her cute orange nails against the perfect paired shade of turquoise she sported via sundress.
  • Do the unexpected! The element of surprise is harder to accomplish for women’s wear, but you can make this look poppin’  by changing up the usual ‘pop of color.’ Wearing all purple? Hit up a coral cocktail ring and then some neutral shoes, or vice versa. Watch neutral “boring” accessories (or even your own nails) suddenly become super hip, chic, and unexpected. Voila!

Dat’s Wack:
i.e. avoid these potential pitfalls.

  • Combining old faded items= totes WACK. Choose fabrics with some movement and good color saturation. In most cases, this is NOT the perfect time to bust out that well-loved cobalt sweater or to revive the fuchsia giveaway tee you have in the bottom of your drawer. (More on this to come.) Rarely will this serve you well. Again, fabric and texture rule for this look.
  • Ugly shoes. Completing this look is a must in order to avoid looking like a nut job. Unless that’s what you’re going for… in which case you ought to be reading something else.
  • Pairing with Black: Once you resolve to make a bold statement, don’t waste the effort and take the easy way out. This look is far from safe, and throwing a black top on with your hottie hot colored bottoms says “I wanted to rock this, but I got scared at the last-minute and wasn’t sure how to follow through.” Black DOES have its place if paired with intention and with the right shades. As always when it comes to risk taking, proceed with caution and care and you’ll be all set.

Moral of the story:
Keep this look sleek, simple and sophisticated and you’ll be lookin’ hot and ready to rock.

That’s all for now. Later gators. xoxo Liana

Welcome to my world, where fashion rocks, confidence rules, and life is all you need to get high. My goal is to share as much useful information with all you hip guys and gals who want to listen in, sans novels or rambling. Of course O.S.I.S. will be fashion focused, but I’ll also be adding tid bits about places I go, what I’m up to, you know, life. ‘Cause it’s my party and I’ll write what I want to;) But let’s be honest, I really want to write what YOU want me to. So if there’s something you want to know or see added, ask away! If I don’t know, I’ll find out, or hook you up with someone who does.

Sound good? Sweet! Enjoy. xoxo -Li
